Melasma is a dark or tan facial skin discoloration that is usually common in women and especially with women that are pregnant. The melasma is a disease that is acquired when the skin is maximum exposed to the sun. The common symptoms of the disease are dark and irregular patches that are commonly found on the nose, upper cheek, forehead and upper lip and the areas that are often open to the sun and the patches develop slowly over time making them dark.

Causes

The disease is most commonly seen in women aged 20-40 and in pregnant women. The diseases effects the forehead, cheeks and the lips and the disease is more common in dark skin rather than fair skin. The cause of the disease is usually genetic, due to hormonal changes and mainly because of exposure to the sun. There are no other symptoms of melasma other than cosmetic bruising and dark patches on the face. The disease is very much rare during the teenage years and it most commonly occurs in women that are close to the reproductive stage.

Treatment of Melasma

There are some of the easiest ways you can get rid of melasma during pregnancy. You should apply the bleaching cream before the sunscreen on your face as these creams contain hydroquinone that inhibits the formation of new pigments. These creams usually take three to six months to obtain a valuable lightening of pigmentation and so after six months you should stop using your daily bleaching cream. Sun screen creams are also very much effective over melasma. The most important part of treatment is sun protection, where you should protect your face the maximum. You can make use of the hat to shade your face from the sun.
